I have the FL's in neck and middle position witrh a DSV+ or SSV+ in the bridge.

The FL's are stronger sounding than average SL's IMO.
The in-between sounds are not as glassy as my Peter Florence
Voodoo SL's.
Ya the 50 never really took off due to the fact the overdrive channel did not have enough gain on tap for the public. I love it and if you just hit it with an overdrive pedal..she rips!
Pat I remember when Peter played your amp and the words he used about Bruce! Great memories!

1. SWD: What is the humbucker like in your terminology? What should it be called-- electromagnetic pickup or electrogenerator?
Seth Lover: I like to call them just humbucking pickups. I call them a generator, because that’s essentially what they are.

2. SWD: The pickups were designed using heavier strings than today.
Seth Lover: The pickups were designed using heavier strings with the high E being a .012 gauge and now they use .008 which moves the magnetic field much less. They just can’t generate enough energy with that size string. Some players say “my pickups are weak,” if they would only use a heavier string that the pickup was designed for they wouldn’t have any problem.

3. SWD: Because your losing your magnetic field?
Seth Lover: That’s right, the magnetic field comes up to the stings there and magnetizes the strings. That’s one of the things that most people don’t understand. They figure that string is waving there and cutting the magnetic lines of force. Nuts. That isn’t it. The magnet, all it does is magnetize the string. Now you’ve got a waving magnetic field. And we have a fixed coil with a waving magnetic field to induce voltage. If you want to, take the magnet out. One you’ve magnetized your strings, it will play until the string loses it. Players think the string, the magnetic field from the magnet comes up to the string and by twisting the magnetic flux back and forth that’s what induces the voltage. That’s not what happens. There’s a certain amount of that, but that’s minor. What is happening is you have a magnetic field that is moving back and forth across the coil. And when you move a magnetic field back and forth across the coil you induce voltage. If you move the field up and down it wouldn’t induce any voltage. It’s the motion back and forth across the pickup that does it.

Read this whole interview here:

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/seth.html

IT`s interesting that there`s so few comments about the interaction of the fingers, stringgauge, stringbrand (nickel/steel etc), type of pickups etc. in this topic...

The strings and interaction with pickup/guitar body/plectrum/fingers play a whole significant role before it hits the amps and racks...
My conclusion on this topic is String type/gauge=personal style/tone.

Whats better?? Hmm.... let me refrase the question: Who has the best tone, SRV or Billy Gibbons?

Best regards,
Rrrrrrrr

When Lover designed those pups the rest of the gear wasn't what it is nowadays..now there's no reason to use 12's anymore

Hmm...Are you soooo suhr about that....
PAF-retro pickups...
"Plexi"/"blackaface"-reference amps
NOS/VOS strats/Les pauls...
NOS tubes...
Vintage voiced speakers...
Etc...

I don`t see too much difference.... But then again the pedals are better/differ in choices...and of course Higain amps...and high output pickups (since the `70s)...

But thenagain we might talk about to different styles/preferences...

Rrrrronny

When Seth Lover designed the PAF there was no plexi or BF fender's ..There was no Marshall at all actually ..but anyway Vintage gear or reissue is only used by a small % of players and it doesn't mean that you need big strings to sound good on a LP..see Gibbons

I see your point Bruno, I may digress- but the classic TONES many of us use as reference describing tones we search for, is the classic Les Paul PAF -> Plexi/Blackface or Strat-> Blackface/Plexi...
In term of what sounds best regarding string gauges, it may not differ as much as we think, maybe the big issue is: The better you feel while playing, the closer you are to YOUR tone...
I`ve used .009s for more technical playing on my "strat", these days I`m getting more soulful/classic strat sound from .010s..but that`s maybe just me, and how it makes me feel on that "strat".
.....or, maybe I have smoked my socks....
So I was watching the video clip SS posted and thought damn that axis/variplex combo sounded great. Alwayz had a soft spot for them Ernie Balls. Skimming through ebay a few dayz later I suddenly came over a lightly abuzed and not to badly prized EVH and before I knew it I hammered the buy it now button until my thumb was pouring blood and there you have it. Now I have three. Oh well can't wait until it gets here. Gonna fire it though my new CCA Crackhead-100 and see if it can hang with the other abusevictims.
_________________
Gluke

Top Hat Emplexidor from 1997. I was going to have Mastervolume (Joe Morgan) build me a Plexi clone until he acquired the Emplexidor. I asked him if this amp will get me to Plexi-land... a resounding yes. Plus, it has the old Pacific trannies that are no longer made. Ken Fisher used to use these trannies in his amps as well. It's these trannies that give it a different vibe than the current production Emplexidors... much different.

_________________
BOF !

Convention has it that the white stripe will be positive. This is industry standard and UL standard.

If you are unsure, you can always snip off the molded end and replace it with a KobiConn or such.

Mouser has great customer service. You could always call and ask.
Ebay claims they haven't seen much complaints about the new feedback rules - what a bunch of lieing bastards. Reality escapes them, faster than their business model is collapsing.

I tried it through my JMP-1/Mesa Boogie 50/50 rig. I set a Clean patch up so that all the EQ settings were at 0, with a suitable volume/gain.

Tuning the pedal on/off, you could hear the difference. This is with out boost or a tiny bit of boost. It helped bring back the top end so my cleans now sound less dull. On a crunch patch, it just seemed a bit more defined.

Trying it against my usual crunch/clean patches it just seemed to help with the definition.

Its now fitted to my board (I lurrve the blue light) and is always on. Looking fwd to the next couple of weeks as I have a number of gigs so interested to see how it goes.
_________________
If I don't see you no more in this world, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late....

I had a Matchless DC-30 for about 10 years. I think that it gets in the Vox neighborhood but it's different to me. I think it's more Vox meets Marshall. I think for the money the DR.Z. Maz 38 Sr. is great. Get it with a blue alnico and you are right there. The Dr.Z Prescription is suppose to be a Vox type amp he designed for Brad Paisley but I've never heard it.
